MEETING OF 30 DECEMBER 2008 |

CLUB BUSINESS
· David Evans gave us the results of the Kiwanis-Rotary Salvation Army Kettle competition. But there really wasn’t any! Kiwanis collected $823.71 at Wal-Mart; Rotary only managed to scrape up $735.32. When the kettle was passed at our last Kiwanis meeting, we contributed $1,555.37. The Rotarians managed to part with a paltry $320. Totals then are Kiwanis $2,379.08 and Rotary $1,055.32. This makes the third year in a row that Kiwanis has bested Rotary. |

· Sharrock’s Kiwanis Moment: Key Club International is Kiwanis’ oldest continuing youth service program. The first Key Club, for Key Boys, was organized by the Kiwanis Club of Sacramento in 1925. The concept of a service club for high school students spread to other Kiwanis Clubs, and Key Club became an official program of Kiwanis International by 1942. Today, more than 150,000 young men and women belong to Key Clubs in more than 4,000 high schools throughout the U.S., Canada, and a growing number of other nations. Key Club International is largely run by its members who hold conventions and elect officers each year at the district and international levels.
· Kyle Hickam brought eleven left-over pies, 2 tins of chocolates, and a bag of walking sticks today. All were left from the apples sales campaign. He was selling pies for $10, and the chocolate goodies for $5. Anything to help the bottom line. |

THE PROGRAM Today Steve Doerr brought us up-to-date on the construction projects at the three middle schools. In 2007 Joplin voters authorized a $57.3 Million bond issue. Because of that, Joplin Schools are now in the midst of building or remodeling three middle schools. Two of the new facilities should be ready for students in next fall. |
